Competency-Based Education: Lessons from New Hampshire

- Objectives for learning were defined in terms of “competencies” involving 21st-century skills like problem solving and creativity, over rote knowledge?
- Assessments were continuously integrated into students’ learning experiences, giving educators useful data to inform learning.
- Students progressed at their own individualized pace as they mastered content and skills, rather than being moved along—ready or not—based on their age.
States, districts, and schools working to individualize learning for all students are taking these ideas from imagination to reality nationwide through a strategy known as “competency-based education.”
Join Education Evolving and the Bush Foundation at 4pm on Thursday 6/15, for a learning event and discussion with two key architects of the system-wide shift toward competency-based education in New Hampshire.
Our guests are Paul Leather, Deputy Commissioner at the NH Department of Education and a key designer over the last two decades of systems and policies supportive of competency education; and Ellen Hume-Howard, Curriculum Director for both the Sanborn Regional School District, a district at the forefront of implementing competency education, and the Performance Assessment of Competency Education (PACE) project.
Together they will describe what competency-based education looks like in practice for schools and districts. They’ll also describe the networks, organizations, and state policies that have helped create the conditions for this statewide shift at the ecosystem level.
