With social studies standards under review, equity must hold priority

Updated January 2021.

Every ten years, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) undergoes a year-long process to review and revise each academic standard by subject. In 2020, social studies was up. The process so far has included social studies standards committee work to create and release the first new draft for the current public review and feedback period, which will last until January 4, 2021.

Attached is a letter we submitted to MDE’s Social Studies Academic Standards team and leadership outlining our concerns over equity in the standards revision process.

We also submitted a memo to the standards review committee, informed by critical education stakeholders, offering a set of recommendations to achieve equitable, culturally responsive, student-centered social studies standards in the next draft of standards.
