Alex Vitrella

Program Director

Alex has spent her career working with youth and focusing on education issues. She spent five years teaching both in Minneapolis as well as abroad in Costa Rica and Italy. Prior to joining Education Evolving, Alex worked at the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis advocating for individual students’ educational needs.

Alex began working with Education Evolving in 2012. She has done extensive research on the Finnish education system as well as teaching preparation programs. Currently Alex handles networks and school support for EE in Minnesota—through which she enjoys getting to spend her days talking to teachers and learning what matters to them. She also provides support to Minnesota teachers who are interested in or actively working in teacher-powered schools.

Alex also believes in being a strong local steward. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, two kids, and dog, where she serves on the executive councils for both the Longfellow Community Council and the Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Partnership. Alex earned a JD from the University of Minnesota Law School and a BA from Carleton College.

About Education Evolving

Education Evolving is a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization working to improve public education.

Our mission is to advance student-centered learning for all students, by supporting teachers designing and leading schools, and by advocating for policy that catalyzes community-led innovation.

Our founders and leaders have been instrumental in innovations such as open enrollment and public school choice, the nation's first charter school law, and schools designed and run by teachers.
