SUMMARY:Learning from Disruption\, Healing Forward
DESCRIPTION:This year’s event comes at a critical time. We are more than a year into a pandemic that upset a status quo that was already failing so many\, and the emergence of a new future appears ever closer. We must learn from this disruption—find opportunity in it—and recognize the harm and trauma it brought. Our path forward must be one of healing. \nThrough student performances\, keynote speakers\, virtual school tours\, breakout sessions\, and more we’ll explore how schools can see us—students\, families\, communities\, educators—for who we are and help us move toward a more equitable\, student-centered future. \nJoin us to build momentum and capacity for student-centered learning across Minnesota\, North Dakota\, South Dakota\, and the 23 Native nations that share the same geography. \nRegistration open April 7.

SUMMARY:Retaining Teachers: Fostering Conditions Where Talent Thrives
DESCRIPTION:This event has passed. Please read the recap of the event on our blog. \nPlease join Education Evolving and the University of St. Thomas School of Education for a conversation on what we can do in Minnesota to not only keep teachers in the classroom\, but also create the conditions that enable them to thrive. \n \nDr. Richard Ingersoll from the University of Pennsylvania will present his research on why teachers leave the profession at such alarming rates—and what keeps some teachers in the classroom. \nWe will also hear from a panel of local teachers and administrators working to build the conditions that help teachers thrive\, moderated by Dr. Kathlene Campbell\, Dean of the St. Thomas School of Education\, and featuring: Dr. Latanya Daniels\, principal at Richfield High School; Vanessa McDuffie\, resident at Minneapolis Special Education Teacher Residency; Nafeesah Muhammed\, teacher at Community Connected Academy at Patrick Henry High School; Krissy Wright\, advisor at Jennings Community School; and Bao Vang\, principal at Community of Peace Academy. \n \nWe are grateful to the McKnight Foundation for their generous financial support for this event. \nAgenda:\n\n4:00-4:30: Reception and networking\n4:30-5:00: Introduction and talk from Dr. Ingersoll\n5:00-5:30: Educator panel\n5:30-6:00: Q&A and next steps\n\nAbout Dr. Ingersoll:\nDr. Ingersoll’s research is concerned with the character of elementary and secondary schools as workplaces\, teachers as employees\, and teaching as a job. He has published over 100 articles\, reports\, chapters\, and essays on topics such as: the management and organization of schools; accountability and control in schools; teacher supply\, demand\, shortages\, and turnover; induction and mentoring for beginning teachers; teacher preparation and teacher quality; the problem of under-qualified teachers; the status of teaching as a profession; and changes in the demographic character of the teaching force. \nAfter teaching in both public and private schools for a number of years\, Dr. Ingersoll obtained a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992. From 1995 to 2000 he was a faculty member in the Sociology Department at the University of Georgia. Currently he is the Board of Overseers Professor of Education and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Author David Osborne on "Reinventing America's Schools"
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a reception and discussion with David Osborne as part of his nationwide tour to celebrate the release of his new book\, Reinventing America’s Schools: Creating a 21st Century Education System. David is the author of several books\, including the New York Times bestseller\, Reinventing Government\, and leads the education project at the D.C.-based Progressive Policy Institute. \nA new paradigm for public education is emerging to fit the realities of the 21st century. In his book\, David offers a bracing survey of the most dramatic improvements taking place in urban education today in cities as diverse as Denver\, Washington D.C.\, and New Orleans. \nThese cities all have one thing in common: they embrace a public education system that relies on school autonomy\, accountability\, and choice. \nThey’ve embraced these principles in different ways—in both the charter and district sectors; through elected boards and appointed commissions; with leadership from mayors and from local coalitions. In all cases\, the driving goal is the same: giving those closest to the students the freedom to design learning more relevant and responsive to student needs. \nPlease join Progressive Policy Institute\, Education Evolving\, and EdAllies for a reception with appetizers and beverages\, a short presentation from David\, a panel discussion with local education leaders\, and a Q&A. \nThe local panel will include: \n\nBrandie Burris-Gallagher\, Policy Director\, EdAllies\nRep. Roz Peterson (56B)\, Minnesota House of Representatives\nJulene Oxton\, Innovation Coordinator\, Lakeville Public Schools\nLars Esdal\, Executive Director\, Education Evolving as moderator

SUMMARY:Competency-Based Education: Lessons from New Hampshire
DESCRIPTION:Imagine if:\n\nObjectives for learning were defined in terms of “competencies” involving 21st-century skills like problem solving and creativity\, over rote knowledge?\nAssessments were continuously integrated into students’ learning experiences\, giving educators useful data to inform learning.\nStudents progressed at their own individualized pace as they mastered content and skills\, rather than being moved along—ready or not—based on their age.\n\nStates\, districts\, and schools working to individualize learning for all students are taking these ideas from imagination to reality nationwide through a strategy known as “competency-based education.” \nJoin Education Evolving and the Bush Foundation at 4pm on Thursday 6/15\, for a learning event and discussion with two key architects of the system-wide shift toward competency-based education in New Hampshire. \nOur guests are Paul Leather\, Deputy Commissioner at the NH Department of Education and a key designer over the last two decades of systems and policies supportive of competency education; and Ellen Hume-Howard\, Curriculum Director for both the Sanborn Regional School District\, a district at the forefront of implementing competency education\, and the Performance Assessment of Competency Education (PACE) project. \nTogether they will describe what competency-based education looks like in practice for schools and districts. They’ll also describe the networks\, organizations\, and state policies that have helped create the conditions for this statewide shift at the ecosystem level.
