Education|Evolving has been observing Aveson Educational Cooperative since it formed in 2007. Aveson Corporation, a separate organization with a similar name, is authorized by Pasadena Unified School District, to run two chartered schools: Aveson School of Leaders (K-5) and Aveson Global Leadership Academy (6-12). Via a contract, the Corporation formally delegates its authority to design and manage the schools to Aveson Educational Cooperative (AEC), which is organized as a "consumer cooperative" under California statute (Corporations Code Section 12200, et. seq.) and operates like a workers’ cooperative. The Corporation pays AEC a lump sum fee to provide the services. As AEC and the schools are still in a start-up phase, they’ve limited coop membership to a few teachers in the school and others who work as professional development consultants to bring additional revenue into the coop. Currently, we’ve determined it is operating much like an Educational Management Organization, rather than as a TPP in which authority is formally distributed more across the community of teachers in the school. AEC plans to spend more time developing a TPP-style cooperative in 2009 and 2010.
