Teacher Authority Is...
De Facto
Department of Education authorized conversion to charter knowing the school would offer teachers some decision-making authority. Teachers' authority rests on the goodwill of the governing board, and their ability to make final decisions is limited to the areas indicated. In regard to evaluation of colleagues, Renaissance participates in peer evaluation. No waiver is required because New York state is moving towards including peer evaluation as part of Race to the Top.

About the Learning Program

American education has seen competing cycles of "progressive education" and "traditional education." The Renaissance Charter School (TRCS) incorporates both viewpoints into its curricular and instructional approaches. Teachers believe that education can be lively and challenging at the same time, that teachers with strong instructional goals can also be child-centered, that our cultural heritage can be conveyed while student interests are recognized, and that high academic standards can be achieved while recognizing high standards of respect for every person in the community. In every classroom teachers have a strong commitment to diversity and heterogeneity and strive to see the unique talents of each student.
