About the Inventory

Education|Evolving follows the evolution of K-12, public schools in which teachers have professional autonomy to control what matters for school success. When we learn of such a school, we seek to understand:

  1. Does the collective group of teachers have final authority to make decisions at the school (as opposed to an advisory role)? We evaluate teachers’ level of authority in ten areas of autonomy.
  2. How does the group of teachers get its authority?

We’ve found that there are a variety of ways in which teachers get authority. Also, for each way teachers get authority there are schools having different mixtures of autonomies from the list of ten. To see the autonomies for each school, you can view each school’s inventory profile.

This inventory will always be a work in progress, and what is reported here is based on what we have learned from email or phone interviews with teachers at the individual schools. We have indicated where schools are listed despite our not having yet connected with the school for an interview.

If you notice any errors, or would like to suggest a school to be added to this inventory, please email us at inventory@educationevolving.org.
