What is YouTube?

Founded in February 2005, YouTube is known as a leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on www.youtube.com and across the Internet through Web sites, mobile devices, blogs, and email. In November 2006, within a year of its launch, YouTube was purchased by Google Inc.

YouTube's video playback technology is based on Macromedia's FlashPlayer 7. This and other technologies allow YouTube to display videos with quality comparable to more established video playback technologies (such as Windows Media Player, Realplayer or Apple's Quicktime Player) without requiring the user to download and install a Web browser plugin in order to watch video. If you have an Internet browser, then you should not need to download anything new to watch the E|E videos.

Why does Education|Evolving use YouTube?

Education|Evolving uses YouTube to host our videos because it is safe and reliable, and displays videos online in a format that can be viewed by most Web users. Using YouTube eliminates the technical burdens of storing the video directly on Education|Evolving site, and allows us to concentrate more on the content of the videos, rather than the technical details of hosting them.

Why don't I have to be on the YouTube Web site to view Education|Evolving's videos on YouTube?

The videos on this site are "embedded" YouTube videos. This means that the video looks like it is part of the Education|Evolving Web site, even though the actual footage of the video is streaming from YouTube servers. Please note that if you click the Share button that appears in the video frame at the end of the film, you will be taken to the YouTube site. All pages on the YouTube site have the YouTube logo in the upper left corner.

Do I need to create a YouTube account to watch or share the E|E videos?

No, you do not need to create an account to watch videos on YouTube. At the end of each YouTube film, a button appears in the video area labeled Share. You can click this button to send the video to your colleagues’ email. Sharing videos does not require you to sign up for a YouTube account. You only have to sign up for a account if you wish to upload your own videos to YouTube for others to see.

Does E|E mind if my organization embeds the videos on its own site?

E|E realizes that organizations and individuals can very easily and quickly embed these YouTube videos into their own Web sites. We welcome the opportunity to bring the discussion we are launching to your site. We ask that you associate the content with Education|Evolving, and link to us, so people can benefit from the context and content we’ve worked to provide.
